Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of DNA profiling in identifying victims of mass natural disasters, where conventional identification methods often prove inadequate. Using a descriptive and analytical approach, it explores the scientific basis of DNA profiling, the procedures followed in disaster victim identification, and the legal considerations governing its use. The study also highlights selected practical experiences, including the Algerian response to the 2003 Boumerdès earthquake and the Bab El Oued floods. It concludes that DNA profiling is a highly accurate and reliable identification tool when supported by standardized forensic procedures, qualified laboratories, and an appropriate legal framework.
